Deflector Options for BBQ, Two-Zone & Pizza
Add indirect heat, two-zone grilling and pizza capability to your Medium Big Green Egg with CGS ceramic deflectors. Use 14" half-moons on the CGS Medium Woo for BBQ and two zone grilling, or choose a full round stone for pizza and baking setups.
Note: To use 14" deflectors, they must sit above the fire ring on our Woo.
Best pairing: CGS Medium Woo, 14" half-moon deflectors, 5/8" spacers & 14" stainless drip pan
Choose Your Medium EGG Setup
Best for BBQ, smoking and full indirect coverage on the CGS Medium Woo.
Best for two-zone grilling with one direct side and one protected indirect side.
Recommended for BBQ cooks to protect the ceramic and help keep the grill cleaner.
Best for pizza and baking when you want one continuous ceramic surface.
Why 14" Half-Moons Work Well on the Medium EGG
On the CGS Medium Woo, the 14" half-moon deflectors sit elevated above the fire ring. That raised position helps maintain airflow around the setup, which supports steadier temperatures and cleaner burns during indirect cooks.
- BBQ and low-and-slow: use two 14" half-moon deflectors for full indirect coverage
- Two-zone grilling: use one half-moon to create a direct side and an indirect side
- More coverage: 14" half-moons provide broader indirect protection than the Medium EGG ConvEGGtor
- Easy Woo integration: half-moons slide in and out from the side of the CGS Woo
- Flexible setup control: run one or two deflectors depending on the cook
For a deeper look at setups and configurations, see the Medium Big Green Egg Woo product page.
Use a Full Round Stone for Pizza
If pizza is the main goal, use a 12" to 14" full round ceramic stone depending on your setup. A full round stone gives you one continuous ceramic surface for pizza and baking.
- Pizza: full round stones work best when you want one continuous cooking surface
- Baking: useful for small breads, desserts and compact baking setups
- Air gap: ceramic spacers help even out stone temperature when your setup allows room
Remember the 14" Drip Pan & Spacers
For BBQ cooks, pair the deflectors with the CGS 14" stainless steel drip pan. A drip pan helps shield the ceramic from grease and drippings, keeps the grill cleaner and helps extend the life of your deflectors.
CGS Ceramic Spacers are helpful for pizza setups because they create an air gap between the lower heat barrier and the pizza stone. For BBQ cooks on the Medium Woo, spacers are usually not recommended because vertical clearance is limited.
👉 Pairing Tip: For BBQ, use the 14" stainless drip pan above the deflectors. For pizza, use ceramic spacers when your setup allows an air gap under the pizza stone.

FAQs
Which deflector setup is best?
Go with a pair of 14" half-moon deflectors. The are the most versatile for BBQ and two zone grilling.
Can I use one 14" half-moon deflector by itself?
Yes. One 14" half-moon deflector is useful for two-zone grilling. It creates an indirect side while leaving the other side open for direct heat.
How do the 14" half-moons compare to the Medium EGG ConvEGGtor?
The 14" half-moons provide broader indirect coverage than the Medium EGG ConvEGGtor for BBQ. They also let you run one half-moon for two-zone grilling. They are easier to get in and out.
Which option is best for pizza?
A 12" to 14" full round ceramic stone works best for pizza because it gives you one continuous ceramic surface. For best results, create an air gap under the pizza stone when your setup allows.
Should I use a drip pan?
Yes, especially for BBQ cooks. The CGS 14" stainless drip pan helps keep grease and moisture off the ceramic and makes cleanup easier.
Should I use ceramic spacers?
Use spacers for pizza when your setup allows an air gap under the stone. For BBQ cooks on the Medium Woo, spacer use is usually too tight because vertical clearance is limited.
