Add a Second Cooking Grid to Your Weber Summit Kamado

Unlock true multi-level cooking on your Weber Summit E6 or S6 Kamado. The CGS Flexible 2nd-Level Expander is an innovative two-grid system designed to add a high-capacity second cooking level right in the dome.

Innovative Two-Part Grid Design

The key to the CGS Expander is its versatile two-grid setup:

Rear Grid: A fixed 20″ half-moon grid welded directly to the Expander frame. Perfect for grilling veggies, roasting sides, or using as a staging area while cooking below.

Front Grid: A removable 16″ × 20″ oval half-grid. Insert it for high-capacity cooks. When grilling, it can tilt up for easy access below. On low-and-slow BBQ cooks, both grids combined will easily hold one average brisket packer, two large pork butts, or three racks of baby back or St. Louis-style ribs.

Both grids set up on the CGS Flexible 2nd-Level Expander for Weber Summit Kamado

Total upper cooking area is approximately 297 square inches. The Expander provides approximately 5″ of clearance underneath—plenty of room for thick brisket packers and pork butts on the main grate.

Pro Tip: Check out the Half-Moon Hanger accessory below! It pairs seamlessly with our CGS 18" Half-Moon Deflector (the same deflector used with our Spider) for effortless two-zone cooks.

Key Features & Setup Versatility

The Flexible 2nd-Level Expander gives you multiple ways to configure your grill surface. Here are three popular setups:

1. Add a 2nd Grid Above Weber Summit Kamado Grid

Ideal for high-capacity barbecue cooks. The Expander frame simply slips right over the handles on the standard Summit grid. Shown below with the CGS Spider and CGS 18" half-moon deflectors positioned underneath the main grid.

2. Standalone Raised Grid Grilling

Set the Expander directly in the grill frame by itself to raise your grilling surface high into the dome. It is the ideal height for grilling chicken or sausages where you want a gentle char, crisp skin, or slow roast without scorching. Plus, you get direct, unobstructed access to manage your fire or drop in wood chunks.

3. Grilling with 1-1/2 Grids

Keep the main grid in place and install only the welded rear half-grid up top. Use the upper zone for veggies and delicate items at lower radiant heat, while utilizing the lower grid for primary searing.

Expand Your Setup Capabilities

Pairing the Expander with key CGS accessories opens up even more dynamic cooking configurations.

Two-Zone Cooking & Reverse Sear Set-Ups

Create an indirect heat zone up top by placing an 18″ half-moon deflector directly under the rear 20″ grid. To run this setup, you need:

  • CGS Flexible Expander Half-Moon Hanger
  • One CGS 18" Half-Moon Deflector
Top view showing how to set the Flexible Half-Moon Hanger and how to slide the 18" half-moon deflector in & out.

Installation is simple: slide the hanger frame under the half-grid and hook the legs onto the Expander frame with the back-hook facing you. The 18" half-moon deflector then slides smoothly into place. This is the exact same deflector used with the CGS Spider for the Weber Summit Kamado.

This "Up & Back" indirect setup offers distinct advantages:

  • Up in the Dome: Elevates the indirect zone into the dome where heat is smooth and steady—ideal for roasting vegetables or starting step one of a reverse sear.
  • Back-Zone Placement: Keeps the entire front portion of the lower grid open for direct-fire grilling.
  • On-the-Fly Adjustments: Easily slide the deflector in or out during a cook. Simply grip the center of the deflector with tongs while guiding with a heat-resistant gloved hand.

Get Closer to the Charcoal for High-Heat Searing

To drop closer to the fire for intense high-heat searing while maintaining lower grid access, swap out the stock Weber grate for our CGS Spider & 20" Round Stainless Grid combo.

If you do not have the CGS Spider, place a CGS 18" Heavy-Duty Stainless Cooking Grid at the Weber Summit Kamado’s upper charcoal grate level. The Summit’s factory outer charcoal ring supports the 18-inch grid.

CGS Flexible 2nd-Level Expander positioned above an 18-inch stainless steel cooking grid at the top charcoal level of a Weber Summit Kamado.

This configuration offers two key advantages:

  1. Provides an economical high-heat searing grid below the Expander.
  2. Creates more space below the half-grid for easier access when searing.

Whichever setup you choose, the process is similar: gently roast up top over indirect heat, then finish with a hard sear down below over open coals—all without reconfiguring the grill mid-cook.

High-Dome Pizza Baking

Elevate your pizza stone high into the dome using the Expander. Baking near the top of the dome yields superior crust and topping balance, leveraging high ambient heat and radiant dome reflection to bake toppings evenly.

You can run this setup with or without the stock Weber deflector depending on crust thickness. For thin-crust pizza, using just the pizza stone works great; for thicker dough, adding the main deflector underneath helps buffer bottom heat.

We recommend target cooking temperatures around 500°F over a spread-out fire. (Shown above with the CGS 16" Full Round Pizza Stone).
