Add Indirect Heat and Two-Zone Cooking to Compact Kamados

Our 10" half-moon ceramic heat deflectors are built for indirect cooking on kamados with 12" to 13" cooking grids. Use one half-moon to create two-zone grilling, or use a pair for full indirect BBQ smoking.

The 10" deflector is commonly used in these compact kamados:

  • MiniMax Big Green Egg,
  • Small Big Green Egg,
  • Kamado Joe Jr.,
  • Select Spider setups.

Choose Your Setup

Select the option that best matches how you plan to cook:

  • One Half-Moon — includes one 10" half-moon ceramic deflector for two-zone direct and indirect cooking
  • Two Half-Moons — includes a matched pair of 10" half-moon ceramic deflectors for full indirect coverage

Note: Full-round 10" ceramic stones are better suited for dedicated pizza stone

Benefits of 10" Half-Moon Deflectors

A heat deflector transforms your small kamado from a direct charcoal grill into a smoker, roaster, baking setup, or two-zone cooker. The half-moon shape gives you more control than a single round stone because you can choose how much of the fire to block.

  • True indirect cooking — use two half-moons for small BBQ cooks
  • Two-zone grilling — use one half-moon to create a protected indirect side while leaving the other side open for direct heat
  • Compact kamado fit — sized for smaller grills where airflow and clearance matter
  • Better handling — half-moons are easier to place and remove than one full-round ceramic stone
  • Lower replacement cost — if one half breaks, you only replace one side

Common 10" Deflector Setups

  • MiniMax Big Green Egg: use with the CGS MiniMax Woo or MiniMax Spider setups
  • Small Big Green Egg: use with the CGS Small Woo or Small Spider setups
  • Kamado Joe Jr.: use with the CGS Joe Jr. Woo or Joe Jr. Rack
  • Other compact kamados: use where a 10" ceramic heat deflector is recommended

If your grill appears on the CGS website, check its product page for recommended rack systems, drip pans, spacers, and setup details.

Pair vs. Full Round

A pair of half-moon deflectors is the most flexible choice for most small kamado cooks.

Half-moons

  • Use both for full indirect BBQ
  • Use one for two-zone grilling
  • Easier to place before the cook
  • Easier to remove or reposition during a cook
  • Lower replacement cost if one side breaks

Full round

  • Best as a dedicated small pizza stone
  • Good for individual pizzas or small baking
  • Good for grills with a 12" to 14" cooking grid

Use as a Pizza Stone

The 10" ceramic stones can also be used for small pizza and baking setups. If you cook pizza often, go with a full round and dedicate it just for pizza. This helps keep your pizza stone free from grease and BBQ drippings.

When using a stone for pizza, create an air gap between the lower heat barrier and the pizza stone whenever your setup allows. The air gap helps control stone temperature and reduces the chance of scorching the bottom of the crust.

Don't Forget the Drip Pan

For BBQ cooks, we strongly recommend using a 10" stainless drip pan above the ceramic deflector. Ceramic can absorb grease and moisture over time. When trapped moisture heats up, it can steam inside the ceramic and add stress to the stone.

  • Helps keep grease and liquid off the ceramic deflectors
  • Reduces burnt-on buildup
  • Helps keep the inside of the kamado cleaner
  • Helps extend the life of the ceramic deflectors

Benefits of a Gap

On BBQ cooks, CGS Ceramic Spacers can lift the drip pan off the deflector. This air gap helps reduce direct heat transfer from the ceramic to the pan, which can help limit burnt drippings during longer cooks.

Small kamados often have limited vertical clearance, so spacer use depends on your rack system and cooking grid position. If the setup is tight, place the drip pan directly on the deflector. If you have room, spacers can help create a cleaner-running indirect setup.

Pro Tip: Having the drip pan closer to the cooking grid is generally better than having it sitting directly on the deflector, as long as the pan does not interfere with the grid or restrict airflow.

FAQs

Can I use one 10" half-moon deflector by itself?

Yes. One half-moon is useful for two-zone cooking. It creates an indirect side while leaving the other side open for direct heat.

Do I need two half-moon deflectors for BBQ?

For full indirect BBQ, we recommend using two half-moon deflectors together. That gives you better heat protection across the cooking area.

Can these be used as pizza stones?

Yes, but for pizza we generally prefer a full-round 10" stone because it gives you one continuous cooking surface. Half-moons are more flexible for indirect and two-zone cooking.

Should I use a drip pan?

Yes, especially during BBQ cooks. A 10" stainless drip pan helps keep grease and moisture off the ceramic and makes cleanup easier.

Should I use ceramic spacers?

Use spacers if your setup has enough vertical clearance. Spacers can create an air gap between the deflector and drip pan, which helps reduce burnt drippings. If clearance is tight, place the pan directly on the deflector.

Will the deflectors darken with use?

Yes. Ceramic deflectors naturally darken as they absorb smoke and cooking residue. This is normal and does not affect performance.

Can I high-heat clean burn the deflectors?

We do not recommend aggressive high-heat clean burns. Using a drip pan helps reduce buildup and the need for heavy cleaning.
