Ultimate Upgrade for XL Big Green EGG

The latest XL Handle Spider adds welded handles and a top ring to make managing XL grids, half-moon deflectors, and double indirect setups effortless. It retains all the core benefits of our Original Spider: searing close to the fire, flexible two-zone grilling, and creative wok stir-frying.

Built in the USA from heavy-duty 304 stainless steel, this CGS-exclusive upgrade delivers unparalleled control and versatility inside the XL Big Green EGG.

Compatibility & System Integration

Pick the Spider that best matches your rack system or cooking style. All three versions fit the XL Big Green EGG:

  • CGS Handle – Designed for the CGS XL Woo, XL Adjustable Rig, XL Flexible 2nd Grid, and convEGGtor.
  • BGE Handle – Made to pair with the Big Green Egg XL EGGspander system and convEGGtor.
  • Original – No handles or top ring, offering lower-ring functionality.

Note: Lower-ring accessories like 18-inch deflectors, smaller searing grids, and woks are compatible with all Spider versions. Top-ring grid support and handle utility require the CGS or BGE Handle Spiders.

Component Placement

For anyone unfamiliar with the inside of an XL Big Green EGG, the picture below identifies the key EGG parts and shows where different components sit inside the grill.

In simple terms:

  • XL Spider sits lower — at or inside the fire ring.
  • CGS XL Woo, EGGspander, and convEGGtor sit higher, from fire ring to felt line.

Using the Spider

The Spider's lower ring drops about halfway inside the fire ring. The top ring rests securely on the fire ring. The three welded legs keep the Spider properly positioned.

Quick XL Grid Lifter

The XL EGG grid slips over the Spider handles. Effortlessly lift the grid in and out. Always use proper hand protection.

Managing Deflectors

The Spider's lower ring supports one or two 18-inch half-moon deflectors. It is a simple way to set up indirect with the XL cooking grid on the fire ring.

Simple Double Indirect

Use the Handle Spider to hold the lower deflector for double indirect. It pairs easily with the CGS Woo, CGS Adjustable Rig, EGGspander, or convEGGtor.

The 18-inch half-moons match nicely to the circular section of the convEGGtor. You can also swap out the convEGGtor and double up on the 18-inch half-moons.

Depending on your top deflector setup, you will have approximately 1/2" to 1" open gap between deflectors when double indirect.

⚠️ IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE:

  • For double-indirect cooks, it is best to use the Handle Spider.
  • It is best to lift each deflector independently — take advantage of the handles.
  • Do not lift or carry the Original Spider, with no handles, in tandem with any rack system. The Original 3-Leg can shift under load and fall out, risking injury or damage. Trust us on this one — go Handle Spider.

Two Zones - Single Half-Moon Deflector

Use one CGS 18-inch Half-Moon Deflector to quickly create a two-zone grilling setup. The XL grid sits on the fire ring.

XL Cast Iron Grids

Sear Closer to the Lump

The lower ring can support a grid to sear inside the fire ring for high-heat grilling close to the fire. Grid options are:

  • 20-Inch Stainless Cooking Grid for XL Adjustable Rig, CGS
  • Large Big Green EGG Full Round Cast Iron Grid, 122957

Perfect for reverse searing with the Adjustable Rig or Flexible 2nd Grid — move only the meat, not your setup.

Pro Tip: We prefer the 18-inch large BGE cast iron grid on the Spider, shown above, over XL half-moon cast iron grids on the fire ring. The 18-inch grid gets closer to the lump, provides ample searing area, and is more cost-effective than buying two half-moons.

Big Low & Slow Capacity

With the Adjustable Rig system, manage huge BBQ cooks: 6+ pork butts, 2 briskets, or 9 racks of ribs — all possible on two or three grids in the XL EGG.

Wok Ready

Drop in a 16 to 20-inch round-bottom wok for authentic, restaurant-style stir fry. Offset wok handles if needed.

Original Spider

For a limited time, we will continue to offer our Original Spider, with no handles or top ring. You will have similar setup capabilities as the Handle Spider's smaller, bottom ring.

FAQs

What does the XL Spider do?

The XL Spider creates a lower support level inside the XL Big Green EGG. It can hold half-moon deflectors, smaller grids, cast iron grids, and round-bottom woks closer to the fire.

Which XL Spider should I choose?

Choose the CGS Handle Spider if you use the CGS XL Woo, XL Adjustable Rig, XL Flexible 2nd Grid, or convEGGtor.

Choose the BGE Handle Spider if you use the Big Green Egg XL EGGspander system.

Choose the Original Spider if you only need simple lower-ring support and do not need handles or the top ring.

How is the Spider different from a Woo, Rig or EGGspander?

The Spider sits lower, at or inside the fire ring. The CGS XL Woo, Rig and BGE EGGspander sit higher, from the fire ring toward the felt line. The Spider is best for lower deflector placement, searing close to the lump, wok cooking, and double indirect setups.

Can I use the XL Spider for double indirect cooking?

Yes. The XL Spider is a great way to hold the lower deflector for double indirect cooking. It can be paired with the CGS XL Woo, CGS XL Adjustable Rig, BGE EGGspander, or convEGGtor depending on your setup.

The Handle Spider gives you welded handles and a top ring, making it easier to manage heavier deflectors and grids. For double indirect cooks, we recommend lifting each deflector independently and using proper hand protection.

The Original Spider can support lower-ring setups, but we do not recommend lifting or carrying it together with another rack system. Without handles or a top ring, the Original Spider can shift under load. For double indirect setups, the Handle Spider is the better choice.

What size deflectors fit the XL Spider?

The lower ring works well with one or two CGS 18-inch half-moon deflectors. This setup can be used for indirect cooking, two-zone grilling, or as the lower deflector layer in a double indirect setup.

Can I sear closer to the fire with the XL Spider?

Yes. The Spider lower ring can hold a grid inside the fire ring, closer to the lump charcoal. This is useful for high-heat searing and reverse sear finishes.

Are grids, deflectors, or woks included?

No. Cooking grids, half-moon deflectors, cast iron grids, convEGGtor, wok, Woo, Adjustable Rig, and EGGspander components are sold separately.

Can I use a wok with the XL Spider?

Yes. The XL Spider can hold many 16 to 20-inch round-bottom woks. The lower position puts the wok closer to the fire for hot and fast stir-frying.

Do the handles stay cool?

No. The Spider is used inside the grill and will get hot during cooking. Always use proper hand protection when handling hot grids, deflectors, woks, or the Spider.
