Find the Right Replacement Cooking Grid for Your Big Green Egg

Replacing your Big Green Egg stainless steel cooking grid isn't always as simple as matching your grill size. Big Green Egg has introduced new cooking systems, changed certain grid dimensions, and discontinued some traditional full-round cooking grids. Depending on your Egg and cooking setup, there may be more than one grid option—but they don't all fit the same way.

These genuine OEM 304 stainless steel cooking grids are designed for traditional full-round cooking setups. Before ordering, check the size guide and compatibility details below, especially if you use a convEGGtor, Dual Zone, EGGspander, or CGS rack system.

Not sure which grid you need? Give us a call before ordering. With over 20 years of hands-on experience designing and working with kamado cooking systems, we can help identify the correct replacement for your Egg and setup.

Big Green Egg Cooking Grid Size & Diameter Guide

Use this chart to match your Big Green Egg model with its traditional full-round cooking grid diameter. Be sure to review the model-specific details below, as grid dimensions and cooking system compatibility have changed over the years.

Egg Size Grid Diameter Fitment & Availability
Mini 10-inch Egg discontinued in 2025; replacement parts remain available
MiniMax 13-inch Shares its cooking grid size with the Small Egg
Small 13-inch Egg discontinued in 2025; replacement parts remain available
Medium 15.75-inch Originally 15-inch; newer grids measure approximately 15.75-inch
Large 18.25-inch OEM grid discontinued; CGS Heavy Duty Grid recommended
XL 24-inch OEM full-round grid discontinued; available while supplies last
2XL 29-inch Full-round cooking grid with handles

Original Medium Egg Grids Were Smaller

Original Medium Big Green Egg cooking grids measured approximately 15-inch in diameter. For several years, the newer OEM Medium grid has measured approximately 15.75-inch. If you own an older Medium Egg, check your existing grid and cooking setup before selecting a replacement.

Recommended Large Egg Replacement

Big Green Egg has discontinued its traditional full-round stainless steel cooking grid for the Large Egg.

For a replacement, we recommend the CGS 18-inch Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Grid. Its beefier construction provides a stronger, more substantial cooking surface and excellent long-term durability compared with the original Egg grid.

Important XL Egg Grid Size Difference

For the XL Big Green Egg, the traditional full-round cooking grid measures approximately 24-inch in diameter and is being discontinued. The newer Dual Zone half-moon grids form a cooking surface approximately 23.5-inch in diameter.

The half-inch difference between full round and half-moon matters for proper fit and support. If you are replacing the grid above your traditional XL convEGGtor, choose the 24-inch full-round XL cooking grid, not the smaller Dual Zone half-moon grids.

If you want a full-round grid for your XL Dual Zone System, the 24-inch OEM grid will fit. However, it can only be used on the upper level of the Dual Zone rack.

Full-Round Grids vs. Dual Zone & EGGspander Grids

Big Green Egg offers several cooking grid configurations, and they are not interchangeable simply because they are designed for the same Egg size. The correct grid depends on the cooking system you use.

  • Traditional convEGGtor (Plate Setter) Setup: Requires a standard full-round cooking grid.
  • New Dual Zone Cooking System: Full-round cooking grids fit only on the upper level of the expander rack.
  • EGGspander System: Full-round cooking grids fit only on the upper level of the expander rack.

Compatible with CGS Rack Systems

Standard full-round EGG or CGS cooking grids are compatible with corresponding CGS rack systems. Depending on the system, you can create raised-grid grilling, indirect cooking, and multi-level cooking configurations without modifying the grids in this product offering.

Always match your Egg size, grid diameter, and rack system before ordering replacement components.

Stainless Steel Cooking Grid Care

  • Wash with warm, soapy water before the first use.
  • Lightly oil the grid before grilling foods that are prone to sticking.
  • Brush away cooking residue after use with a suitable grill brush or scraper.
  • For deeper cleaning, soak in warm water with mild dish soap and dry thoroughly.
  • Avoid sudden extreme temperature changes that may stress the metal.
  • Keep your Egg covered when not in use to help protect the cooking grid and other components.

Big Green Egg Cooking Grid FAQs

How do I know which cooking grid fits my Egg?

Start by identifying your Egg size and cooking system. Traditional full-round grids are sized for each Egg model, while Dual Zone and EGGspander systems use half-moon grids that may differ by model and cooking system. Feel free to call us if you need help.

What size cooking grid fits the Medium Egg?

The current OEM Medium cooking grid measures approximately 15.75-inch in diameter. Earlier Medium grids measured approximately 15-inch. Current accessories are based on a 15.75-inch grid.

What is the best full-round replacement grid for the Large Egg?

We recommend the CGS 18-inch Heavy Duty Stainless Steel Grid. With the original Big Green Egg OEM Large grid discontinued and remaining inventory available only while supplies last, the CGS Heavy Duty Grid offers a durable alternative with beefier construction.

Can I use Dual Zone half-moon grids with my convEGGtor?

No. The traditional convEGGtor (Plate Setter) setup requires a full-round cooking grid. The new Dual Zone half-moon grids are designed for their corresponding Dual Zone support system and are not suitable replacements.

What is the difference between XL full-round and Dual Zone cooking grids?

The traditional XL Big Green Egg uses a 24-inch full-round cooking grid. The newer XL Dual Zone System uses two half-moon grids forming an approximately 23.5-inch cooking surface. The size difference affects how the grids fit and are supported.

Are EGGspander half-moon grids the same as Dual Zone grids?

Yes and no. Compatibility depends on your Egg model and cooking system. Some configurations share compatible components, while others do not. If you're unsure, give us a call before ordering.

Do stainless steel cooking grids need to be seasoned?

No. Stainless steel cooking grids do not require seasoning like cast iron. A light coating of cooking oil before grilling can help reduce food sticking, but routine seasoning is not required.
