Why We Recommend the Kick Ash Basket

Here’s why many Big Joe owners prefer the Kick Ash Basket over the factory Kamado Joe basket:

• Integrated Handles: Easy lift-in and lift-out handling.
• No Deflector Interference: The Kick Ash Basket does not interfere with both half-moon heat deflectors on the Divide & Conquer system’s lowest level.
• More Adjustable Divider Option: The CGS Divider provides greater flexibility compared to the Joe divider.

Better User Experience vs. Divide & Conquer: Using the Divide & Conquer (D&C) to hook and lift the Joe Basket can require extra space and multiple steps. You end up managing two pieces at once and needing two landing spots.

Most users find it much easier to remove the D&C, lift the Kick Ash Basket by its handles, empty it, and return it.

Note: the Kick Ash Basket handles are much easier to manage than the Joe Basket hooks.

• Works in the Big Joe Basket, but it is not purpose-built like the CGS Divider

Both dividers allow you to run direct heat on one side and indirect heat on the other — ideal for reverse searing, roasting, or managing smaller fuel loads.

Optional: Kick Ash Can (KAC-BL)

Add the optional Kick Ash Can for contained, mess-free ash removal. No more raking ash out of the lower slider vent.

• Remove the factory lump grate
• Remove the sliding ash tray assembly (Classic & Big Joe models)
• Use with a Kick Ash or Kamado Joe Basket

How to Use: Place the Can in the bottom of your Kamado Joe. After each cook, shake the ash from the basket into the Can, remove the Can, dispose of ash in a nonflammable container, and return the Can. The process takes less than two minutes.

No issues of the Can fitting have been reported to us. Here are the Can dimensions if you want to confirm fitment:

Important: Removing the sliding ash tray also removes the face plate that influences airflow and helps minimize embers blowing out of the vent.

Our Preferred Setup

For both grilling and low & slow BBQ on the Kamado Joe Big Joe:

• High-Heat Grilling: Remove the lump grate to maximize airflow and reach higher temperatures faster.
• Low & Slow BBQ: Leave the lump grate between the Basket and Can to mimic the grill’s natural slower airflow.

Tip: Hold the lump grate vertically above the Can and tap it gently to drop ash into the Can before removal.

Firebowl design may vary slightly. Always measure to confirm compatibility.

Not all baskets use true 304 stainless, the same wire thickness, or maintain correct internal spacing — all of which affect durability and compatibility. Charcoal can repeatedly reach temperatures approaching 1800°F, making material quality critical.
