Product Description
Two Cast Iron Surfaces for Griddling & Searing
The Kamado Joe Half-Moon Cast Iron Reversible Griddle gives you two heavy-duty cast iron cooking surfaces in one.
Use the smooth side for flat-top cooking or flip it over to the ribbed side when you want raised grill marks and direct-contact searing.
Available in sizes for Classic Joe, Konnected Joe, and Big Joe grills, the half-moon design works with the Divide & Conquer Flexible Cooking System and lets you combine cast iron with another cooking surface on the opposite side of the grill.
Key Features & Benefits
- Reversible Cooking Surface: Smooth on one side and ribbed on the other for two distinct styles of cast iron cooking.
- Excellent Heat Retention: Heavy cast iron absorbs and holds substantial thermal mass for consistent contact cooking.
- High-Heat Searing: Fully preheated cast iron delivers intense contact heat for deep browning and flavorful crust.
- Solid Cooking Surface: Keeps smaller foods, drippings, and delicate ingredients from falling through an open wire grate.
- Half-Moon Flexibility: Griddle on one side while using a stainless grate, cast iron grate, soapstone, or deflector on the opposite side.
- Divide & Conquer Compatible: Position the griddle at different heights within the flexible cooking system to control heat exposure.
Smooth Side vs. Ribbed Side

Smooth Griddle Side
- Smash Burgers: Solid contact creates broad browning and a well-developed, crispy crust.
- Breakfast: Cook eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes, and other foods requiring a solid flat-top surface.
- Seafood & Vegetables: Keeps delicate fish, scallops, or sliced veggies from falling through the grid.
- Blackening: Run the cast iron hot for a dark, broad crust on fish, chicken, and other seasoned proteins.
Ribbed Searing Side

- Steaks: Raised ribs create defined grill marks while delivering strong contact heat.
- Chops & Chicken: High surface heat produces rich color and a traditional grilled appearance.
- Vegetables: Add dark grill marks while keeping sliced vegetables supported on a solid cast iron surface.
Choose the Right Griddle Size
Classic Joe and Big Joe grills require different size half-moon griddles. Choose the option designed for your grill's Divide & Conquer system:
- Classic Joe 18-inch Griddle (KJ-HMCIG): Fits Kamado Joe Classic Joe Series (18" grills) and the 18-inch Konnected Joe.
- Big Joe 24-inch Griddle (BJ-HMCIG): Fits Kamado Joe Big Joe Series (24" grills).
Big Green Egg Fitment: Kamado Joe also lists the Classic-size griddle as compatible with the Large Big Green Egg and the Big Joe-size griddle as compatible with the XL Big Green Egg.
Looking for More Cast Iron Searing Options? Check out our Kamado Joe Half-Moon Dual-Sided Cast Iron Searing Grates for open-grate grill marks on Classic and Big Joe grills.
For a full-round setup, the Kamado Joe Round Dual-Sided Cast Iron Sear Plate fits the Joe Jr. and drops into the lower Divide & Conquer ring on Classic Joe and Konnected Joe grills for heavy cast iron searing close to the charcoal.
Optimizing Your Cast Iron Cook
For a strong sear or blackened finish, cast iron needs to absorb serious heat. At CGS, we like positioning cast iron lower in the Divide & Conquer system when the cook allows. Getting the griddle closer to the charcoal delivers stronger direct heat without requiring the entire grill to run excessively hot.
Pre-Cook Routine
Start with a clean cooking surface and apply a very light coating of cooking oil before adding your food. This helps reduce sticking and makes cleanup much easier after the cook.
Give the Cast Iron Time to Preheat
Cast iron has substantial thermal mass. Give the griddle enough time to fully heat before adding food so the surface can deliver the aggressive browning and crust you want.
Center Your Cook
Cook toward the hotter portion of the charcoal bed when maximum searing is the goal. Keeping the food over the strongest section of the fire helps maintain high surface temperatures throughout the cook.
Move When Flipping
When it's time to flip, move the food to a fresh section of the cast iron. The first side pulls heat out of the metal, so shifting to a fully preheated section allows the second side to sear just as aggressively.
Size & Specifications

Cast Iron Care
- Allow the cast iron to cool down completely before handling.
- Wash by hand with hot water and a soft brush or scraper.
- Mild dish soap can be used when needed.
- Dry the griddle completely immediately after cleaning.
- Apply a very thin coating of cooking oil before storing to help protect against rust.
CGS Pro Tip: After cleaning and drying, apply a thin coat of high-smoke-point oil and return the griddle to the warm grill as it cools down. This helps drive off lingering moisture and maintains the seasoned cast iron surface for your next cook.
