Product Description

Indirect & Two-Zone Cooking for the Primo Oval XL

Primo Oval XL Ceramic Heat Deflector Plates create a barrier between the charcoal and cooking grids, turning the Oval XL into a flexible indirect cooker for low & slow barbeque, roasting, baking and two-zone grilling.

Use one deflector plate when you want direct and indirect heat at the same time, or install the pair for broad indirect coverage across the Oval XL cooking area.

Choose Primo OEM or CGS Deflector Plates

Choose genuine Primo OEM Ceramic Deflector Plates or save with CGS Ceramic Deflector Plates designed for the Primo Oval XL.

Both options use the D-shaped design needed to fit the oval cooking area and are made to the same ceramic thickness. The CGS version uses a longer straight edge and sharper corners to provide slightly more indirect coverage.

Primo OEM Ceramic Deflector Plates

Pair of genuine Primo OEM ceramic heat deflector plates for the Primo Oval XL grill.

CGS Ceramic Deflector Plates & Stainless Deflector Racks

Pair of CGS ceramic heat deflector plates supported by stainless deflector racks inside a Primo Oval XL grill.

Recommended Uses:

  • Primo Oval XL: Sized and shaped for the Oval XL cooking area
  • Full Indirect Cooking: Use both ceramic deflector plates
  • Two-Zone Cooking: Use one plate to leave the opposite side open to direct charcoal heat
  • Low & Slow Barbeque: Ideal for brisket, ribs, pork shoulder, poultry and other longer cooks
  • Roasting & Baking: Use the pair to create a more oven-like indirect cooking environment
  • Plate Options: Choose genuine Primo OEM or CGS ceramic deflector plates

Important: Each ceramic deflector plate requires a compatible heat deflector rack to support it below the cooking grid. Deflector racks are sold separately unless specifically included with the selected option.

How the Deflector Racks Work

The deflector racks hang below the cooking grids and support the ceramic plates directly over the charcoal.

Install the racks first, place the ceramic deflector plates into the racks, then position the cooking grids above.

  • Two racks + two plates: Creates full indirect coverage for barbeque, roasting and baking.
  • One rack + one plate: Creates separate direct and indirect cooking zones.

Because the Primo Oval cooking chamber is divided naturally from side to side, the two-piece deflector system makes it easy to configure the grill around the cook.

Where Should the Deflector Plates Sit?

The ceramic plates sit below the cooking grids on compatible Primo or CGS heat deflector racks.

The racks suspend the ceramic above the charcoal, creating space around the fire while positioning the heat barrier below the food.

Install both racks and plates for full indirect cooking or use a single rack and plate when you want one side direct and the other indirect.

Using a Drip Pan

For barbeque cooks, CGS recommends placing a drip pan above the ceramic deflector plates.

Ceramic is porous and can absorb grease and moisture. Reheating trapped moisture can create steam inside the ceramic and place additional stress on the plate.

A drip pan helps keep grease off the deflectors, reduces buildup inside the grill and makes cleanup easier after long cooks.

For easier cleanup, line the pan with foil in an overlapping + pattern.

Benefits of Ceramic Spacers

CGS Ceramic Spacers can be used to create an air gap between the hot ceramic deflectors and a drip pan or baking stone positioned above them.

  • Under a drip pan: Helps reduce scorching and burnt drippings
  • Under a pizza stone: Creates thermal separation between the lower heat barrier and baking surface
  • Added lift: Helps position a pan or stone higher when the cooking setup allows

Primo OEM vs. CGS Deflector Plates

Both Primo OEM and CGS deflector plates are designed around the D-shaped opening of the Primo Oval XL and provide the ceramic heat barrier needed for indirect cooking.

Primo OEM: Genuine Primo plates designed for the original Primo deflector system.

CGS: A lower-cost alternative made to the same ceramic thickness, with a longer straight edge and sharper corners that provide slightly more indirect coverage.

Both options are sold as a pair and require compatible deflector racks for support below the cooking grids.

Care & Maintenance
  • Do not use soap, detergents or chemical cleaners on the porous ceramic.
  • Do not clean the plates in a dishwasher or submerge them in water.
  • Scrape away loose food debris after the ceramic has cooled.
  • Use a drip pan to help protect the ceramic from grease buildup.
  • Avoid aggressive high-heat cleaning burns.
  • Allow the ceramic to heat and cool gradually whenever possible.
  • Expect the natural ceramic surface to darken with normal use.
Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need two deflector plates for full indirect cooking?

Yes. Use both ceramic plates when you want indirect coverage across the Primo Oval XL cooking area for barbeque, roasting and baking.

Can I use just one deflector plate?

Yes. One plate creates an indirect zone on one side while leaving the other side open to direct charcoal heat.

Do the ceramic plates sit directly on the firebox?

No. Each plate requires a compatible heat deflector rack that suspends the ceramic below the cooking grid and above the charcoal.

Are the heat deflector racks included?

Deflector racks are sold separately unless the selected product option specifically states that racks are included.

What is the difference between Primo and CGS deflector plates?

Primo plates are genuine OEM plates. CGS plates use the same ceramic thickness but have longer straight edges and sharper corners for slightly more indirect coverage while providing a lower-cost alternative.

Will the ceramic darken with use?

Yes. Ceramic heat deflector plates naturally darken as they are exposed to smoke and cooking residue. This is normal and does not affect cooking performance.

Can I clean the plates with a high-heat burn?

We do not recommend aggressive high-heat cleaning burns. Scrape away loose debris and gently burn off remaining residue at moderate temperatures as needed.
