Indirect & Two-Zone Cooking with Primo Oval Deflectors

Ceramic heat deflector plates turn a Primo Oval into a flexible indirect cooker by creating a barrier between the charcoal and food. Use them for low & slow barbeque, roasting, baking and two-zone grilling.

Primo Oval grills use a two-piece ceramic deflector system, allowing you to use one plate for a split direct-and-indirect setup or both plates for full indirect cooking.

Choose Your Primo Oval Size

Deflector plate size and shape vary by Primo Oval model. Choose your grill below for the correct plates, fitment and product details.

Most Common Deflector Setups

Use one or both ceramic plates depending on how you want to configure the grill:

  • Two Plates: Creates a full indirect setup for ribs, brisket, pork shoulder, poultry, roasting, baking and other longer cooks.
  • One Plate: Creates separate direct and indirect heat zones for flexible two-zone grilling.

How Primo Oval Deflector Plates Work

The ceramic plates sit below the cooking grids on compatible heat deflector racks. The ceramic creates a barrier over the charcoal, reducing direct radiant heat and creating the indirect cooking environment used for barbeque, roasting and baking.

  • D-Shaped Design: Primo deflector plates are shaped to fit the oval cooking area.
  • Two-Piece System: Use one side independently or combine both plates for full coverage.
  • Ceramic Construction: Helps shield food from direct charcoal heat while allowing heated air to circulate through the grill.
  • Sold as a Pair: Primo OEM deflector sets include two ceramic plates.

Primo OEM & CGS Deflector Options

Genuine Primo ceramic plates are available for the Primo Oval lineup. For the Oval XL and Oval Large, Ceramic Grill Store also offers a more economical CGS deflector option.

CGS plates provide the same basic indirect and two-zone cooking functionality while offering an alternative to the OEM ceramic plates.

The Primo Oval Junior and Oval XXL use genuine Primo ceramic deflector plates.

Heat Deflector Racks Are Required

Important: Each ceramic plate requires a compatible heat deflector rack to support it below the cooking grid. The ceramic plates do not sit directly on the firebox.

Deflector racks are sold separately unless specifically included with the selected product option.

How the Racks Work

  • Racks hang below the cooking grids and support the ceramic plates above the charcoal.
  • Install the racks first, place the ceramic deflector plates into position, then add the cooking grids above.
  • Use both racks and plates for full indirect coverage.
  • Use one rack and plate when you want a direct and indirect cooking setup at the same time.

The two-piece system is one of the advantages of the Primo Oval design because you can configure each side of the grill around the food and cooking method.

Note: Grill, deflector racks and cooking grids shown for illustration only and are not included unless specified with the selected product.
