Upgrade Airflow & Simplify Ash Cleanup on Your Medium Big Green EGG
Add a Kick Ash Basket to your Medium Big Green EGG to improve airflow, simplify ash cleanup, and better manage your lump charcoal.
The Basket can be used with or without the factory charcoal grate, allowing you to tune airflow based on your cooking style.
This heavy-duty stainless wire basket:
- Securely holds lump charcoal
- Lets you quickly shake loose ash before every cook
- Maintains clear, consistent airflow for faster startups
- Provides easy access to the bottom of the firebox for ash cleaning
- Includes FREE CGS Lump Rake ($18 value)
Pair the Basket with the optional Kick Ash Can for contained, mess-free ash removal from the Medium EGG firebox.

The Medium EGG firebox is typically very consistent, but we always recommend confirming measurements before ordering to ensure a proper fit.

Our Preferred Setup
For both grilling and low & slow BBQ on the Medium Big Green EGG:
- High-Heat Grilling: Remove the factory lump grate to maximize airflow and reach higher temperatures faster.
- Low & Slow BBQ: Leave the lump grate in place to mimic the grill’s natural slower airflow.
Tip: Shake the Basket before each cook to remove loose ash and maintain consistent airflow.
Our Experience
Ceramic Grill Store fabricated the first lump charcoal basket for kamado-style grills back in 2006 — years before baskets became common accessories. We understand what makes a basket system durable, usable, and effective inside a ceramic cooker.
Material and design details matter:
- Uses high-quality 304 stainless steel
- Built with proper wire diameter for strength and heat resistance
- Designed with airflow geometry that maintains a stable fuel bed
- Maintains proper clearances for manufacturer and third-party accessories, including CGS systems
Not all baskets use true 304 stainless, the same wire thickness, or maintain correct internal spacing — all of which affect durability and compatibility. Charcoal can repeatedly reach temperatures approaching 1800°F, making material quality critical.
