Build Full-Indirect, Two-Zone or Double-Indirect Setups

Add greater indirect flexibility to your Weber Summit Kamado E6 or S6 with CGS 18" half-moon ceramic heat deflectors. Use one or two deflectors to create:

  • Full Indirect: Use a pair of deflectors to shield the cooking grid from direct heat during ribs, brisket, pork shoulder, poultry and other low-and-slow cooks.
  • Two-Zone Grilling: Use one half-moon deflector to create direct and indirect cooking zones beneath the main Weber cooking grid or on the CGS Flexible 2nd-Level Expander.
  • Double Indirect: Position a pair on the CGS Spider above the Summit Kamado’s stock metal deflector to create two stacked heat barriers.

Full-Indirect Smoking BBQ

The CGS 18" ceramic half-moon deflectors are slightly larger than the Summit Kamado’s 18" metal deflector plate. The thicker ceramic construction adds greater thermal mass between the charcoal and cooking grid, helping diffuse direct heat before it reaches the food.

Place a pair of half-moon deflectors on the CGS Spider to create a full-indirect setup for brisket, ribs, pork shoulder, poultry and other low-and-slow cooks.

Important: A pair of 18" deflectors is too large to place on either of the Summit Kamado’s charcoal-grate levels. There is not enough perimeter clearance for proper airflow. The CGS Spider is required when using a pair of 18" ceramic half-moons together.

Two Zones with the Summit Cooking Grid

Use one half-moon deflector to divide the cooking grid into direct and indirect zones. Grill over the open charcoal for higher direct heat while cooking over the deflector with gentler indirect heat.

Depending on the cook, the half-moon deflector can be positioned on the CGS Spider or on the Summit Kamado’s upper charcoal-grate level. We recommend the Spider because it positions the deflector closer to the cooking grid for more focused heat protection.

Two Zones with the CGS Flexible 2nd-Level Expander

The 18" half-moon deflector can also be used with the CGS Flexible 2nd-Level Expander to create an indirect cooking zone high in the dome.

This setup leaves the front portion of the Summit Kamado’s lower grid open for direct-fire grilling. It works especially well for vegetables, chicken and reverse searing.

The deflector can slide into or out of the hanger during the cook, allowing you to change the setup without removing the Expander.

Note: The CGS Flexible Expander Half-Moon Hanger is required to position the 18" deflector beneath the Flexible 2nd-Level Expander.

Double Indirect with the CGS Spider

For double-indirect cooking, leave the Summit Kamado’s stock deflector in its standard lower position and place a pair of CGS 18" half-moon deflectors on the CGS Spider. The ceramic deflectors use the same Spider position shown above in the Full-Indirect Smoking & BBQ setup.

The two separate heat barriers provide additional heat diffusion during long brisket, pork shoulder and rib cooks. The Spider positions the CGS ceramic deflectors approximately 2" below the Summit Kamado’s main cooking grid.

Protect the Ceramic from Drippings

Ceramic heat deflectors are porous and can absorb grease and drippings. For larger meat and barbeque cooks, position the CGS 18" Stainless Drip Pan above the deflectors to help protect the ceramic and reduce baked-on buildup.

Line the pan with two overlapping sheets of heavy-duty foil for faster cleanup. Allow an air gap between the deflectors and drip pan whenever the setup provides enough vertical space.
