Two-Zone & Indirect Cooking for the 2XL Big Green Egg

The Big Green Egg 24-inch Half-Moon Ceramic Heat Deflector adds flexible direct and indirect cooking options to your 2XL Egg. Designed for use with the 2XL convEGGtor Basket inside the 2XL, these ceramic deflectors let you create two-zone grilling setups or full indirect cooking configurations.

Use one half-moon deflector to shield half the cooking area from direct charcoal heat while leaving the other side open for grilling. Combine two half-moon deflectors for broad indirect coverage when smoking brisket, cooking ribs, roasting, or preparing low-and-slow barbeque.

Important: Deflectors are sold individually. Order two for a complete full-indirect setup.

One Deflector or Two? Choose Your Cooking Setup

Two-Zone Cooking with One Half-Moon Deflector

Install one 24-inch half-moon deflector in the 2XL convEGGtor Basket and leave the opposite side open to the charcoal. Food positioned above the ceramic cooks with indirect heat, while the uncovered side provides direct radiant heat from the fire.

This arrangement makes it easy to cook foods requiring different heat levels or move food between direct and indirect heat during the cook.

Full Indirect Cooking with Two Deflectors

For full indirect cooking, place two 24-inch half-moon deflectors side by side in the support basket. Together, they shield the cooking area from direct charcoal heat for low-and-slow barbeque, roasting, and smoking.

The split design also makes it easy to switch between full indirect and two-zone cooking by removing one of the deflectors.

Reverse Searing in the 2XL Egg

A single half-moon deflector creates a convenient reverse-sear setup. Slowly bring steaks or other thick cuts toward their target internal temperature over the indirect side, then move them over the open charcoal side for the final high-temperature sear.

Because both cooking zones are available at the same time, you can move between indirect and direct heat without removing the ceramic during the cook.

Cooking Tips, Ceramic Spacers & Care

Protect Your Deflectors with a Drip Pan

For low-and-slow barbeque, we strongly recommend placing a stainless steel drip pan above the ceramic deflectors whenever your setup allows.

Ceramic is porous and can absorb grease and moisture. Reheating trapped moisture can create steam inside the ceramic and place additional stress on the stone. A drip pan helps protect the deflectors while making cleanup easier.

Using CGS Ceramic Spacers

CGS Ceramic Spacers create an air gap above the deflectors and can improve several cooking configurations.

  • Under a Drip Pan: Helps reduce scorching and burnt drippings by separating the pan from the hot ceramic.
  • Under a Pizza Stone: Creates thermal separation between the heat deflectors and the upper baking surface.
  • For Added Height: Helps raise a pan or stone when the rack configuration and dome clearance allow.

Ceramic Deflector Care & Maintenance

  • Do not use soap, detergents, or chemical cleaners on the porous ceramic.
  • Do not submerge the deflectors in water or clean them in a dishwasher.
  • Scrape away loose food debris after the ceramic has cooled.
  • Allow remaining cooking residue to burn away gradually during normal cooking.
  • Use a drip pan when possible to limit grease buildup.
  • Avoid aggressive high-temperature cleaning burns.
  • Allow the ceramic to heat and cool gradually whenever possible.
  • Expect the natural ceramic finish to darken with repeated use.

2XL Big Green Egg Half-Moon Deflector FAQs

Are the 24-inch half-moon deflectors sold individually or as a pair?

Each 24-inch half-moon heat deflector is sold individually. Order one for two-zone cooking or two for a complete full-indirect setup.

What supports the 24-inch deflectors inside the 2XL Big Green Egg?

The deflectors are supported by the XL Big Green Egg convEGGtor Basket, SKU 119735, positioned below the 2XL cooking grid.

Can I use these 24-inch half-moon deflectors in an XL Big Green Egg?

No. These half-moon deflectors are intended for the 2XL Big Green Egg. They are too large for the XL Egg and other kamado grills with cooking grids measuring 24-inch or smaller.

Can I use the deflectors for pizza cooking?

Yes. Two half-moon deflectors can provide the lower heat barrier for an indirect pizza setup. Position a separate pizza stone above the deflectors with an air gap between the ceramic surfaces. Use a compatible rack or ceramic spacers to provide the necessary separation and support. Just note, you may find a smaller 18" pizza stone more advantageous to use.

Will the ceramic deflectors darken with use?

Yes. Ceramic heat deflectors naturally darken as they are exposed to smoke and cooking residue. This is normal and does not affect cooking performance.

Can I clean the deflectors with a high-temperature burn?

We do not recommend aggressive high-temperature cleaning burns. Scrape away loose debris after the ceramic cools and allow remaining residue to burn away gradually during normal cooking.
