Simple Way to Add More Capability to Your XL Big Green EGG

The XL Woo and Flexible 2nd-Grid Combo is a creative and convenient way to manage deflectors, raise cooking grids, and add a true direct or indirect second cooking level.

This two-piece Combo provides excellent day-to-day versatility while keeping the number of accessories to a minimum — all in heavy-duty 304 stainless steel, made in the USA by/for CGS.

XL Woo

The XL Woo lifts your grid near felt-line height for comfortable raised grilling. Its lower ring supports your deflectors — whether that’s the XL convEGGtor or a pair of CGS 18-inch Half-Moon Deflectors — for reliable indirect cooks.

Integrated handles make it easy to lift the Woo in & out of the XL EGG.

Pro Tip: Half-moon deflectors are easier to handle since they slide in and out from the side — no need to remove the cooking grid. Plus, you can use just one half-moon to create a direct/indirect setup.

Flexible 2nd-Grid Advantage

The Flexible 2nd-Grid creates a second cooking level above the felt line — perfect for stacking food, separating heat zones, or roasting high in the dome. Its two-part design lets you run either a half grid or full grid up top.

The grids are based on a 20-inch diameter — approximately equal to the effective grilling area inside the XL fire ring.

  • Rear Grid: Fixed 20-inch half-moon welded to the frame.
  • Front Grid: Removable 16 × 20-inch oval half grid.

The Flexible 2nd-Grid can sit:

  • Directly on the fire ring — with or without the XL grid
  • Atop the XL Woo with Handles — with or without the XL grid and deflector

Up & Back Indirect — Effortless Reverse Sear Setup

Tired of dividing your cooking grid to create direct and indirect zones? The Flexible 2nd-Grid moves the indirect setup up into the dome, so your entire lower grid remains open for searing. No more losing valuable space in the center of your grill.

To complete the “indirect up-top” setup, add these two accessories:

  • Flexible 2nd-Grid Deflector Bracket holds the half-moon deflector directly beneath the rear 20-inch half grid. Installs in seconds — just slide it under the grid and hook the legs onto the frame.
  • 18-inch Half-Moon Deflector creates the indirect zone up top. These are the same half-moons we recommend as a convEGGtor replacement on the XL Woo.

Pro Tip: For mid-cook, on-the-fly changes, use tongs to grab and remove the hot half-moon deflector. Use your other gloved hand to guide the movement.

For the ideal configuration, include the XL Woo. It raises everything higher and provides super-open access to the lower searing grid. You need to add one more grid to sear on the Woo’s bottom ring. The grid can be 15 to 20 inches in diameter.

  • 18- & 20-inch Cooking Grid: Two popular options are the 20-inch CGS stainless grid or an 18-inch large cast iron grid. You can also use the front grid from the Flexible 2nd-Grid if you don’t need maximum grilling space.

Pizza, Fire Access, and More

Pizza Setup: Use the XL Woo and Flexible 2nd-Grid to push your pizza stone high into the dome for even heat. It’s the best way to manage baking temperatures.

For thin-crust pizza (Neapolitan), use only the pizza stone — no lower deflector. For thicker crust pizza or two-stone cooks, add a lower deflector to slow radiating heat.

Open-Access Grilling: Set the Flexible 2nd-Grid directly on the fire ring for a raised-direct or direct/indirect cook with easy fire access — great for roasting chicken, brats, or adding smoking wood mid-cook. Or, place it atop the Woo (without the XL grid) for super-high dome grilling.

Pro Tip: The front oval grid can tilt up when needed (right image above).

Wok & Grill Together: Place your wok in the Woo’s lower ring and run the Flexible 2nd-Grid above — perfect for stir-fry below and direct or indirect cooking up top.

The XL Woo’s lower ring can hold a 16- to 19-inch round-bottom wok for fast stir-fry.

XL Adjustable Rig Comparison

CGS offers two rack systems that pair with the XL Woo. The other is the XL Adjustable Rig.

Not sure which fits your style? Here’s how they differ:

  • XL Adjustable Rig is the full multi-level solution. It can do everything the Flexible 2nd-Grid does — and more. The Rig offers additional grid options and placement flexibility. At 6 inches tall, it’s one inch taller than the Flexible Grid.

No other rack system matches the combined capability of the XL Woo & Adjustable Rig.

  • Flexible 2nd-Grid: A simple, straightforward way to add another level to your XL EGG. Ideal for both grilling and BBQ, it supports half- or full-grid setups and direct or indirect cooking up top.

Which to Pick: If you need ultimate capability, choose the XL Adjustable Rig. If you simply need a second level with added indirect flexibility, the Flexible 2nd-Grid is your match.
