Even Heat, Fewer Flare-Ups & Versatile Cooking

The Kamado Joe Half-Moon Soapstone Cooking Surface gives you a smooth, solid cooking surface for everything from delicate seafood and vegetables to steaks and other proteins.

Available in 18-inch for Classic Joe & Konnected Joe and 24-inch for Big Joe grills, the thick soapstone distributes heat evenly while helping reduce flare-ups from dripping fats and juices.

Designed to work with the Divide & Conquer Flexible Cooking System, the half-moon shape lets you pair the soapstone with another cooking surface on the opposite side of the grill. Use it alongside a stainless grid, cast iron surface, or heat deflector to build the cooking setup that best matches your food.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Even Heat Distribution: Thick soapstone spreads heat across the cooking surface to help minimize hot spots.
  • Reduced Flare-Ups: The solid surface keeps dripping fats and juices from falling directly into the charcoal fire.
  • Smooth, Non-Stick Surface: Provides an excellent cooking surface for fish, scallops, shrimp, vegetables, and other delicate foods.
  • Excellent for Searing: Once fully preheated, soapstone provides a hot, even surface for steaks, burgers, and other proteins.
  • Stain-Resistant Surface: Natural soapstone is easy to clean and does not require seasoning like cast iron.
  • Half-Moon Flexibility: Use the soapstone on one side of the Divide & Conquer system while running a different cooking surface on the other.

What You Can Cook

  • Fish & Seafood: A smooth surface makes it easier to cook delicate fillets, scallops, and shrimp without food falling through a cooking grid.
  • Steaks & Burgers: Preheat the stone for an evenly heated solid surface that produces excellent browning and crust.
  • Vegetables: Cook sliced or smaller vegetables without losing pieces through the cooking grate.
  • Delicate Foods: The smooth surface provides controlled contact heat for foods that can be difficult to manage on an open grate.

Choose the Right Soapstone Size

Classic Joe and Big Joe grills use different size soapstone surfaces. Choose the half-moon soapstone designed for your grill size:

  • Classic Joe 18-inch Soapstone: Fits Kamado Joe Classic Joe Series and the 18-inch Konnected Joe.
  • Big Joe 24-inch Soapstone: Fits Kamado Joe Big Joe Series grills.

Big Green Egg Fitment: Kamado Joe also lists the Classic-size soapstone as compatible with the Large Big Green Egg and the Big Joe-size soapstone as compatible with the XL Big Green Egg.

Soapstone vs. Cast Iron

Both soapstone and cast iron are excellent high-heat cooking surfaces, but they cook differently. Soapstone provides a smooth, evenly heated surface with no open gaps for food or drippings to fall through. Cast iron is a better choice when you specifically want traditional raised grill marks or the versatility of a ribbed cooking surface.

  • Soapstone: Smooth solid surface, even heat, reduced flare-ups, and no seasoning required. Best with fish, delicate foods, or edge-to-edge high-heat searing.
  • Cast Iron: Excellent rapid heat retention. Choose grates for defined grill marks, or griddles for solid-surface blackening and smash burgers. Requires seasoning to prevent rust.

Care & Cleaning

  • Thermal Shock Warning: Always allow the soapstone to cool down completely before washing. Never submerge a hot stone in cold water.
  • Wash with warm, soapy water and a soft sponge or brush.
  • The soapstone can also be cleaned in the dishwasher once cooled.
  • Store in a cool, dry place when not in use.
  • Never place a hot soapstone directly on a table, countertop, or non-heat-resistant surface.

CGS Pro Tip: Give the soapstone plenty of time to fully preheat before adding food. Because of its mass, the stone takes longer to come up to temperature than a stainless cooking grid, but once heated it provides an exceptionally even cooking surface.
