Add Indirect, Two-Zone & Pizza Setups to Your XL Woo

Get more cooking flexibility from your CGS XL Woo with these 18-Inch Half-Moon Ceramic Heat Deflectors. Sized for the XL Big Green Egg, the 18-inch half-moons sit on the Woo’s lower ring to create a simple, stable indirect setup below your cooking grid.

Use one half-moon deflector for two-zone grilling or use two half-moon deflectors for full indirect coverage when smoking ribs, brisket, pork shoulder, chicken, turkey, or other low-and-slow BBQ cooks.

Choose Your Setup

Select the option that best matches how you plan to use your XL Big Green Egg setup:

  • One Half-Moon — includes one 18" half-moon ceramic deflector
  • Two Half-Moons — includes a matched pair of 18" half-moon ceramic deflectors
  • 18" Stainless Drip Pan — strongly recommended to help protect the deflectors and keep your grill cleaner during barbeque cooks
  • Ceramic Spacers — use 1" spacers as-is, or lay 2" spacers on their side for a slightly higher, more stable lift under a drip pan or pizza stone

Note: These deflectors are commonly referred to as 18" stones, but the actual diameter is closer to 18-1/2". Thickness is approximately 3/4".

Built for the CGS XL Woo

The XL Woo makes indirect cooking easy because the deflectors rest on the Woo’s lower support ring, below the main cooking grid. That gives you a clean setup with the heat blocked below the food and the grid positioned at a comfortable cooking height near the felt line.

Unlike a fixed full-round deflector setup, the half-moon design lets you decide how much heat protection you want. Use one side for indirect cooking while keeping the other side open for direct heat, or use both halves together for full indirect coverage across the XL Big Green Egg.

Key Woo Setups

  • Low & Slow BBQ: Use two 18-inch half-moon deflectors for full indirect coverage below the cooking grid.
  • Two-Zone Grilling: Use one 18-inch half-moon deflector to create an indirect zone while leaving the other side open for direct heat.
  • Roasting & Baking: Use both deflectors to stabilize heat under the grid for chicken, turkey, casseroles, bread, and other indirect cooks.
  • Pizza Setup: Use the half-moon deflectors as the lower heat barrier, then add our ceramic spacers and pizza stone above. Build this setup on top of the XL Woo and XL grid.

Why Use 18" Half-Moons on the XL Woo

The 18" half-moon size gives you strong heat protection while still allowing proper airflow around the setup. You'll have approximately 1-3/4" of open air around the deflectors. Open air is the space between the outside edge of the deflector and the inside edge of the fire ring.

The half-moon shape also makes the stones easier to handle, easier to remove, and more flexible than a single full-round ceramic deflector.

  • Easier to handle and position than a full-round ceramic deflector
  • Each half-moon weighs less than a full-round ConvEGGtor-style deflector
  • Matches the circular diameter of the XL ConvEGGtor-style deflector
  • Allows one-deflector, two-zone, and full indirect setups
  • Costs less to replace if one half breaks

Why Use a Stainless Drip Pan

For BBQ cooks, we recommend placing a stainless drip pan above the ceramic deflectors. Ceramic can absorb moisture from drippings and humidity. When that trapped moisture heats up, it can steam inside the ceramic and add stress to the stone.

  • Keeps grease and liquid away from the ceramic deflectors
  • Reduces burnt-on drippings
  • Helps keep your grill cleaner for faster start-ups
  • Helps extend the life of your ceramic deflectors

Ceramic Spacers

Ceramic spacers are useful when you want separation between the heat deflectors, drip pan, cooking grid, or pizza stone.

  • BBQ Cooks: use 1" spacers as-is, or lay 2" spacers on their side for a lower, more stable lift under a drip pan.
  • Pizza Cooks: Use spacers to create an air gap between the lower heat barrier and the pizza stone. Up to CGS 2-inch spacers may be used depending on your setup.

Also Works Across XL CGS Setups

These same 18-inch half-moon ceramic deflectors can also be used with several other XL Big Green Egg setups, including the XL Adjustable Rig, XL Spider 2.0, XL Flexible 2nd Grid, and Big Green Egg XL EGGspander.

Pro Tip: If you own multiple XL accessories, the 18s can move between setups as your cooking style changes. That makes them a versatile upgrade for indirect cooking, two-zone grilling, pizza, roasting, and BBQ.
