Unlock two XL Rig setups most rack systems cannot offer

Get more from your CGS XL Adjustable Rig with these 18-Inch Half-Moon Ceramic Heat Deflectors. Sized for the XL Big Green Egg and built to work inside the XL Adjustable Rig, these ceramic deflectors create indirect, two-zone, reverse sear, pizza, and double indirect setups.

Use one half-moon deflector when you want a direct and indirect zone at the same time, or use two half-moon deflectors when you want full indirect coverage for smoking, roasting, baking, and low-and-slow BBQ.

Max Versatility with the XL Adjustable Rig

The XL Adjustable Rig gives you the most control over where the heat deflectors sit inside the XL Big Green Egg. Place the 18-inch half-moon deflectors low in the Rig for traditional indirect BBQ, move a single deflector higher under a half grid for two-zone grilling, or stack deflectors on multiple levels for a natural double indirect setup.

That ability to change the deflector height is what makes the XL Rig so versatile. Instead of being locked into one fixed indirect setup, you can build the layout around the cook — ribs, brisket, chicken, pizza, reverse sear, or raised-dome grilling.

What's Included

Under Select Deflector, pick:

  • One Half Round - includes a single 18-inch half-moon ceramic deflector
  • Two Half Rounds - includes a matched pair of 18-inch half-moon ceramic deflectors

Note: The true diameter is closer to 18-1/2 inches and 3/4" thick.

Enjoy Access to the Fire When BBQing

Build the entire setup on the XL Adjustable Rig with no XL grid blocking access to the fire.

Set a pair of 18-inch half-moon deflectors on the XL Rig's second lowest level. Placing the deflectors here leaves direct access to the charcoal, allowing you to easily add smoking wood during the cook without touching the food or taking the setup apart.

Check out the video below. It is one of our favorite BBQ setups in the XL Big Green Egg.

Go Upper-Level Indirect for Two-Zone Grilling

Create an indirect zone in the dome using one 18-inch half-moon deflector. This is a great way to move the indirect side up and out of the way, leaving the lower grid area available for direct searing and grilling.

You can set up on the XL grid or go higher in the dome by placing the XL Adjustable Rig on top of the XL Woo.

Best Reverse Sear Setup

Our favorite reverse sear setup pairs the XL Woo under the XL Adjustable Rig. This opens up access to the fire and delivers steady roasting temperatures over the half-moon deflector and half grid. It is also a great setup for grilling vegetables while steaks, burgers, or chops cook indirect above.

Our searing grid preference: We prefer the Large Big Green Egg Cast Iron Grid on the Woo's lower ring over a pair of XL half-moon grids on the fire ring. The Large grid provides nearly the same cooking area at about half the cost.

Pro Tip: You can remove the half-moon deflector during the cook to move from indirect to direct heat up top. We use a pair of tongs to grab the deflector while a gloved hand helps steady it.

Required: XL Adjustable Rig Deflector Bracket

To complete the half-grid and deflector indirect setup, you need the XL Adjustable Rig Deflector Bracket. The bracket holds the 18-inch half-moon deflector directly under the 20-inch half grid.

The bracket installs easily. Just hook the three legs onto the XL Rig's upper ring.

Easy Setup for Pizza

Use the 18-inch half-moon deflectors on top of the XL Adjustable Rig to help push the pizza stone higher into the dome. The XL Rig can sit directly on the fire ring or be super-elevated using the XL Woo and Rig together.

Either the XL Rig or XL Woo can hold the blocking stone, giving you excellent flexibility in the spacing between the heat deflector and pizza stone.

Natural Double Indirect Setup

This entire double indirect setup builds on the XL Adjustable Rig. Place a pair of 18-inch half-moon ceramic deflectors on each of the XL Rig's lower two levels.

Position an 18-inch drip pan just below your 20-inch round grid. The drip pan sits up away from the deflectors, helping reduce burnt-on drippings and keeping the setup cleaner during long BBQ cooks.

To support everything securely, we recommend one XL Slide Guide and two pairs of XL Crossbars.

Pro Tip: For smaller meats like ribs or chicken, set the XL Adjustable Rig on top of the XL Woo. This raises your cooking grid high into the dome, making it useful for crisping chicken skin or finishing ribs at higher temperatures. Just make sure the food stays clear of the dome thermometer.

Why Half-Moon Deflectors

Compared with a full-round ceramic setup, 18-inch half-moon deflectors are easier to handle, easier to position, and give you more setup options inside the XL Big Green Egg.

  • Easier to handle and position than a full-round ceramic deflector
  • Weigh less than a full-round ConvEGGtor
  • Match the circular diameter of the XL ConvEGGtor
  • Allow one-zone, two-zone, and full indirect setups
  • Cost less to replace if one half breaks

Also Works Across XL CGS Setups

These same 18-inch half-moon ceramic deflectors can also be used with several other XL Big Green Egg setups, including the XL Woo, XL Spider 2.0, XL Flexible 2nd Grid, and Big Green Egg XL EGGspander.

Pro Tip: If you own multiple XL accessories, the 18s can move between setups as your cooking style changes. That makes them a versatile upgrade for indirect cooking, two-zone grilling, pizza, roasting, and BBQ.

Why Use a Stainless Drip Pan

Ceramic deflectors can absorb moisture from drippings and humidity. When trapped moisture heats up, it can steam inside the ceramic and add stress to the stone. Using a drip pan helps protect the deflectors and keeps the grill cleaner.

  • Keeps fluids away from the ceramic deflectors
  • Reduces burnt-on drippings
  • Helps keep your grill cleaner for faster start-ups
  • Helps extend the life of your ceramic deflectors

Ceramic Spacers

You can use ceramic spacers, but we recommend upgrading to another pair of XL Crossbars or the XL Slide Guide instead. Both options add more versatility than spacers alone and give you better setup control inside the XL Adjustable Rig.
