Product Description
Genuine Primo Cast Iron Lump Charcoal Grates
Replace a worn, cracked, or damaged charcoal grate with a genuine Primo Cast Iron Lump Grate. Located at the bottom of the firebox, the grate supports your lump charcoal while allowing combustion air to flow upward through the charcoal and ash to fall into the lower firebox area.
These heavy-duty cast iron replacement grates are available for Primo Oval XXL, XL, Large, and Junior ceramic grills. Select the correct grate based on your Primo model and existing firebox configuration.
Why Choose a Genuine Primo Lump Grate?
- Heavy-Duty Cast Iron: Designed to withstand the intense heat generated by burning lump charcoal inside the Primo firebox.
- Supports Lump Charcoal: Holds charcoal above the lower firebox area while allowing ash to fall through the grate.
- Maintains Combustion Airflow: Openings allow air to travel upward through the charcoal bed for efficient burning and temperature control.
- Genuine Primo OEM Replacement: Designed for the corresponding Primo Oval grill and firebox configuration.
- Firebox Divider Support: Center slots on compatible Oval grates accommodate the Primo Cast Iron Firebox Divider.
- Correct Installation Orientation: Install the Oval lump grate with the support pegs facing upward and the marked 'This Side Up' surface facing up.
Primo Lump Grate Sizes & Compatibility
Primo has manufactured different grill and firebox configurations over the years. If you're unsure which replacement grate you need, measure your existing cast iron lump grate outside edge to outside edge and compare it with the approximate measurements below.
Primo Oval Lump Grate Measurements:
- Primo Oval XXL: Contact us before ordering
- Primo Oval XL: Approximately 15 inches
- Primo Oval Large: Approximately 12-1/4 inches
- Primo Oval Junior: Approximately 10-1/2 inches
XXL Availability: Contact Ceramic Grill Store before ordering the Primo Oval XXL lump grate. Availability may be limited, and online inventory listings may not always reflect actual stock.
Older Primo Grills: Some earlier firebox configurations and pre-2015 Primo Firebox Dividers may not be compatible with the current replacement grate. Contact us before ordering if you plan to reuse an older divider.

How the Primo Lump Charcoal Grate Works
The cast iron lump grate sits at the bottom of the Primo firebox, supporting the charcoal above the lower ash collection area. Air enters through the lower draft door, travels through the grate openings, and feeds the burning charcoal.
As charcoal burns, smaller ash particles fall through the openings below the grate. Keeping this area clear helps maintain airflow and makes temperature adjustments more responsive.
Installation & Orientation
When installing the Primo Oval cast iron lump grate, position it inside the firebox with the support pegs facing upward and the marked 'This Side Up' surface facing up.
Make sure the grate sits securely in the firebox before adding lump charcoal. If using a compatible Primo Firebox Divider, confirm that the divider fits correctly into the grate's center slots.

Installation Tips, Care & Frequently Asked Questions
Explore the sections below for additional information about lump grate fitment, firebox dividers, installation, and maintenance.
How Do I Know Which Lump Grate Fits My Primo?
Start by identifying your Primo Oval grill model. If you're uncertain, measure the existing cast iron lump grate outside edge to outside edge.
- Oval XL: Approximately 15 inches
- Oval Large: Approximately 12-1/4 inches
- Oval Junior: Approximately 10-1/2 inches
For the Primo Oval XXL, contact us before ordering to confirm the correct replacement and availability.
Which Side of the Lump Grate Faces Up?
Install the Primo Oval lump grate with the support pegs facing upward.
The grate is marked 'This Side Up' to identify the correct installation orientation.
Make sure the grate is properly seated inside the firebox before adding charcoal.
Will My Existing Primo Firebox Divider Still Fit?
The current Primo Oval lump grates have center slots designed to accommodate compatible Primo Cast Iron Firebox Dividers.
However, some older, pre-2015 Primo Firebox Dividers may not fit the current grate design.
If you have an older Primo grill and want to continue using your existing divider, contact Ceramic Grill Store before ordering so we can help confirm compatibility.
When Should I Replace My Lump Grate?
Cast iron lump grates are exposed to repeated heating and cooling cycles, which can eventually lead to cracking, distortion, or deterioration.
Consider replacing your grate if it has cracked, no longer sits securely in the firebox, or has deteriorated enough that it no longer supports the charcoal properly.
Normal surface discoloration and oxidation do not necessarily mean the grate needs replacement.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Allow the charcoal to burn out completely and the grill to cool before handling the cast iron lump grate.
- Remove accumulated ash and charcoal debris from the grate openings.
- Keep the lower firebox area clear to maintain combustion airflow.
- Inspect the grate periodically for cracks, distortion, or damage.
- Avoid dropping or striking the cast iron grate against hard surfaces.
- Do not quench a hot cast iron grate with water.
The lump grate is a firebox component and does not require the same seasoning or oiling process used for cast iron cooking grids and griddles.
Note: One cast iron lump charcoal grate is included. Primo Firebox Divider, ceramic grill, and other accessories shown for illustration only are not included unless specifically stated with the selected product option.
