Ceramic Heat Deflectors & Pizza Stones for Smaller Kamados

The CGS 10" ceramic deflectors are available as a pair of half-moons or a full-round stone for indirect barbeque, two-zone grilling and pizza baking in smaller kamado grills.

The 10" ceramics are designed for compatible rack systems in grills with nominal 12" to 13.5" cooking grids, including MiniMax and Small Big Green EGG, Kamado Joe Jr. and select other small-kamado setups.

MiniMax & Small Big Green EGG

MiniMax Big Green EGG set up with CGS Woo, pair of 10-inch half-moon ceramic heat deflectors and stainless drip pan.

Use the 10" half-moon deflectors with compatible CGS Woo and Spider setups in the MiniMax and Small Big Green EGG. Use one half-moon to create direct and indirect cooking zones or combine the pair for full indirect barbeque.

Kamado Joe Jr.

Kamado Joe Jr. set up with CGS Joe Jr. Woo, pair of 10-inch half-moon ceramic heat deflectors and stainless drip pan.

The 10" ceramic deflectors fit compatible CGS Joe Jr. rack systems, including the CGS Joe Jr. Woo and Joe Jr. Rack. The half-moon design gives you the flexibility to configure one side direct and the other indirect or combine both halves for full indirect coverage.

Pizza

The full-round 10" stone works well as a pizza and baking stone in smaller kamado grills with approximately 12" to 13.5" cooking grids. Its compact size provides room around the stone for airflow while still offering a useful baking surface.

MiniMax Big Green EGG set up for pizza with two 10-inch ceramic stones in the CGS MiniMax Woo.

Before Ordering: Fitment and positioning depend on the specific grill and rack system being used. Always check the applicable CGS grill or rack-system product page for the recommended deflector size, support position and setup details.

Why Choose Half-Moon Heat Deflectors?

Half-moons give you more flexibility than a single full-round deflector, especially in smaller kamado grills.

  • Two-zone grilling: Use one half-moon to create direct and indirect cooking zones
  • Full indirect barbeque: Combine two halves for complete indirect coverage
  • Compatibility: Pair half-moons with other accessories on the same rack level when the setup allows
  • Easier handling: Two smaller pieces are easier to place, remove and store
  • Lower replacement cost: If one half breaks, you only need to replace that piece
  • Easier fire access: Remove or reposition one half to reach the charcoal during a cook
Setting Up the Full-Round Pizza Stone

For pizza cooks, position the full-round pizza stone above a separate heat deflector with an air gap between the two ceramic surfaces. The lower deflector blocks direct heat from the charcoal, while the elevated stone provides the baking surface.

For even heating, use a lower blocking stone that is at least as large as the baking stone. In smaller kamados, avoid using an oversized pizza stone that restricts airflow around the outer edge.

Position the baking stone high in the dome when your setup allows, while maintaining adequate airflow and staying clear of the thermometer stem.

Use cornmeal or parchment paper between the dough and stone to help prevent sticking. Check the applicable CGS grill or rack-system page for the recommended deflector size, spacing and stone height.

Using a Drip Pan

For barbeque cooks, we strongly recommend placing a stainless steel drip pan above the ceramic heat deflector.

Ceramic is porous and can absorb grease and moisture. Reheating trapped moisture can create steam inside the ceramic and place additional stress on the stone.

Double-wrap the drip pan with foil in a '+' pattern. This makes cleanup much easier.

Benefits of Ceramic Spacers

CGS Ceramic Spacers create an air gap above the heat deflector and can improve your setup in several ways:

  • Under a drip pan: Helps reduce scorching and burnt drippings
  • Between deflectors: Creates separation in double-indirect setups when space allows
  • Under a pizza stone: Adds lift and creates thermal separation between the deflector and baking stone
Care & Maintenance
  • Do not use soap, detergents or chemical cleaners on the porous ceramic.
  • Do not clean the ceramic in a dishwasher or submerge it in water.
  • Scrape away food debris and gently burn off remaining residue at moderate temperatures as needed.
  • Use a drip pan to help protect the ceramic from grease buildup.
  • Avoid extreme high-heat cleaning burns, which can damage the kamado.
  • Allow the ceramic to heat and cool gradually whenever possible.
  • Expect the natural ceramic surface to darken with normal use.
Frequently Asked Questions

Will these 10" deflectors fit my grill?

Fitment depends on both the grill and the rack or support being used. Check the applicable CGS grill or rack-system product page before ordering. Note, 10-inch deflectors do not fit grills with 10" cooking grids.

Do the deflectors require a rack?

Yes. When used as heat deflectors, the ceramic pieces require a compatible Woo, Spider, rack or other support that positions them securely inside the grill.

How should I arrange the stone for pizza?

Place the full-round pizza stone above a separate lower heat deflector with ceramic spacers creating an air gap between them. The lower deflector blocks concentrated direct heat, while the elevated stone provides the baking surface.

Will the ceramic darken with use?

Yes. Ceramic deflectors and pizza stones naturally darken as they are exposed to smoke and cooking residue. This change is normal and does not affect cooking performance.

Can I clean the ceramic with a high-heat burn?

We do not recommend aggressive high-heat cleaning burns. Scrape away loose debris and gently burn off residue at moderate temperatures. Using a drip pan helps prevent heavy grease buildup.
