AA PSWoo Ring
If you own a Large Big Green Egg and enjoy using the ConvEGGtor/platesetter, we have a surprise for you. It's called the PSWoo. Many PSWoo owners have told us: "It's so dang simple but such a genius accessory. We're so glad you invented it!"
In a nutshell, the PSWoo does two things very quickly and efficiently:
- creates a raised grid set-up to grill at the felt line; and
- eliminates the hassles of handling a hot convEGGtor/platesetter, grid or food.
- PSWoo (pictured below left) works with the stock grid that came with your Large Big Green Egg®; and
- PSWoo-CI (pictured below right) works with either the stock grid or Big Green Egg's® large cast iron grid (model 18CI). CI denotes cast iron grid.
Only difference between the two PSWoo designs are the handles. Different handles are required to accommodate the two popular grid styles.
With all the other platesetter tools on the market, you must handle the grid and food before touching the platesetter. It's a hassle. Not so with the PSWoo, it's grab the PSWoo by the handles and lift everything out as one unit. You only touch the PSWoo handles.
The PSWoo positions the grill's stock grid near the felt line for direct grilling on a raised grid. To set the grid, simply set the PSWoo on the fire ring, slide the appropriate grid over the handles and start grilling.
If you have the Big Green Egg large cast iron grid (model 18CI), then the PSWoo-CI is your best choice. The inverted "L" shape handles are designed to fit through the narrow slots on the CI Grid. You can position the CI Grid near the felt line. The BGE stock grid still works with the PSWoo-CI.
The PSWoo makes it easy to set-up for a smoking, BBQ cook or change between a grilling and smoking (direct/indirect) cook. Simply, set the PSWoo on a solid surface and slide the platesetter in or out along the open (front) side. Make sure to wear proper hand protection if the platesetter is hot. You don't need to handle the grid or food if you're in the middle of a cook. The PSWoo's top ring supports the grid and food. Same process for the PSWoo-CI.
The ConvEGGtor®/platesetter legs are supported by the three small loops on the lower ring. The platesetter carries no weight. Again, the grid is supported by the PSWoo's upper ring.
14" and 16" Stainless Drip Pans are preferred to catch drippings and protect the ConvEGGtor. Foil the pans for easy pan clean up. Stainless Drip Pans are available in the Shopping Section.
To handle the set-up, slip your fingers under the PSWoo handles and lift up and out. Just keep the set-up level as you lift.
If you looking for a second level, we have it. To create a second level requires the PSWoo Extender and 16" Sliding D Grid. The Extender creates the space between grids and holds the 16" Sliding D Grid. The PSWoo Extender needs to match your PSWoo:
- PSWoo Extender works with the PSWoo.
- PSWoo-CI Extender works with PSWoo-CI.
Both Extenders function the same. The only difference is how they latch around the PSWoo handles.
Both Extenders provide an elevated platform high in the dome to add a second grid, pizza stone or other accessory. Since they are a PSWoo accessory, both work in tandem with the platesetter.
The Extender height is our favorite height to grill butterfly (spatchcock) chicken and bake pizza. The Extender sits atop the PSWoo and grid. The spacing between grids is approximately 3.5".
The 16" Sliding D Grid slides back on the Extender to open up access to the lower gird. It's as easy as pushing it back with the backside of your hand. Use the Extender's center support crossbar as a visual stop guide when sliding the D Grid back.
To bring the D forward over the Extender, just close the dome. The dome pushes the D Grid back over the PSWoo - very cool.
The PSWoo Extender can hold our 15" or 16" Ceramic Stone for pizza/baking. This is our favorite stone position for baking pizza. We recommend our 15" or 16" stone, as these stones make big pizzas (Pappa Murphy's large). The top of the pizza benefits from the reflective/convective heating off the dome. The stone is high above the felt line, so it minimizes any chance to burn the felt gasket. The stone is far from the lump which helps produce a consistent heating through the stone. Pictured below left is our 16" stone. Pictured below right is our 13" stone. 14" stones and smaller will require the Sliding D Grid for support.
How to Use the Extender: Position the PSWoo so it opens towards you, like pictures above. Slip the grid over the PSWoo handles. Set the Extender's on the grid, with open end toward you. The open ring should be inside both side handles.
With the PSWoo (stock grid) the two short spokes on each side of the open ring rest on the outside edge of each handle. With the PSWoo-CI, the flat tab on each side of the open ring slips between each set of "L" handles. See below for examples. The spokes/tabs keep the PSWoo Extender properly positioned on the grid.
Place the D grid on the Extender so the grid's flat side faces forward and the grid rails sit outside the Extender. Push the D grid back so the front of the Grid is even with the Extender's center support. To bring the D grid forward, just close the dome.
The Extenders is fabricated using 1/4" 304 Stainless Steel. The 16" D Grid is fabricated using 3/16" 304 EPQ Stainless. The D Grid is electro-polished for improved surface performance. Both are made in the USA exclusively by/for Ceramic Grill Store (CGS).
